Pseudo Newb and the battle for Time

Lots of Things Happening. 2 second place draft finishes (UB zombies and GB humans) , A new magic player friend who's both female and my age! The possibility of an actual Lady Planeswalkers society chapter here, a crazy but really interesting invitation. But also, Passover, school, job/business stuff. It's important to keep track of the magic I'm playing and will need to update soon, but apparently this is an important theory article so I'm going to leave the link here.

Now finishing paper and today's exam. And I am ridiculously excited about Avacyn Restored. Good(ish) guys can win! Now if they'd just give me my cool old lady Planeswalker.

  1. Congrats on the high finishes in draft! When I decided to become a competitive player, I started out as a limited specialist and the skills from sealed and draft helped me become a good Standard player, which is all I pretty much play these days.

I've been seeing your comments on various sites about the need for Magic to have a set of teaching tools to help new players become more competent. I totally agree.

I do think for Magic, it's much tougher to create learning tools compared to a game like chess. Magic is constantly changing with set rotations so I think many of the learning tools have to be constantly updated with the latest Standard cards to illustrate the strategy concepts in a relevant way.

By the way, what do you think of the Magic Academy from six years ago? Here's the link: http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=mtgcom/academy/home

I'm trying to apply instruction design principles for intermediate players. For example, I've got some deck building theories that I'm going to test out once Avacyn Restored is released. I think there are shortcuts you can use to figure out the top decks in a new format without having to playtest as much as before.

Anyways, thanks for starting the discussion about how new players can systematically improve their game. I noticed that Aaron Forsythe is interested to hear what you say. That's really cool. Hopefully, Wizards can start creating resources to lower the gap from beginner to intermediate or advanced player.

I've subscribed to this blog to see what you come up with. If you need the feedback of a competitive Standard player, feel free to hit me up on Twitter: https://twitter.com/#!/magicgameplan

    1. Hi dibareezo!

Thanks for your interest you might be my first subscriber. I sort of feel like I should warn you that since this is really my competitive journal I do record a whole lot of personal psychological states and feeling here so I can note how they effect my gameplay and competitive head space.

I also apologize in advance because I'm not really careful about typos here since I'm writing before I chicken out, misremember or minimize things a lot of the time.

Ok I wrote a reply and it's way too long so I'm going to make it a post, because it's relevant for me to keep track of what I'm thinking anyway and maybe my one follower might like it - so this next post is for you. : )
